  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Charlieo -- NOT ABOUT WW2 : I thought this book was about WW2 and the holocaust - it wasn't. It touched upon it and that's it. It's the story of a Hungarian family. I didn't find it exciting, it wasn't a page turner and I was sad about wasting the time it took me to read it. I didn't realize that the series was written by several people and I had purchased the 2nd in the series first. Since it was a series I wanted to read the books in order. If I had paid attention and realized that each book in the series was written by a different author I wouldn't have made the initial purchase. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Carol -- Best book I read in a long time. : I just loved this book. This was so beautifully written with such loving characters. It made me feel as though I was right there, I couldn't put this book down!! I would recommend to anyone to read this. My family are Hungarians and I just found out Hungarian Jews. The food that they ate is what I ate growing up and made me even closer to this book. thank you so much I really enjoyed your book. ( Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Speedy Grandma -- You can't tell a book by its cover. : One of the most beautiful covers I've ever seen, but that just confirms the adage: "You can't tell a book by its cover." I read about a fourth of it and quit. It rambled on and on with totally unbelievable scenarios and too many characters to track. The bear carrying the man to safety did it for me. I was just not willing to invest eight more hours into it. Very disappointing. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Sylvia -- Good story : I enjoyed this book. I like the spirit of the characters through their struggles. I wish only that they had been written a little more depth because I like them and would like to know them better. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ami A. -- Great read! : This amazing novel kept me enthralled, made me laugh and then cry. The storyline covers an extended family during one of Earth’s most horrific events, The Holocaust, and the repercussions that echoed through decades. I highly recommend it. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Denise S. Damron -- Touching Book : I've always been fascinated by the horrendous events that led up to and World War II. This book was a detailed story of several generations of three families and the mysteries resolved by the older sister while trying to save her youngest sister's life. Well written, poignant, it makes you laugh, cry, and learn what love is all about. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2020 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from KAREN B -- Lots to remember : Perhaps I should have paid closer attention. I did end up skimming through pages from time to time. I think the book could have been considerably shorter. I also had trouble keeping track of the many characters But, again, maybe I should have paid closer attention. Many interesting events are described . ( Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2020 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Michele Jackson -- Great story : I really enjoyed reading this book. I loved that the family story was told from different family members perspective. This saga of finding out one's family history takes the reader on a fantastic journey! ( Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from C a walsh -- Interesting : Good up to now hard to put the book down ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 7, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from SUSANNE JANKE -- A story of love ,spanning over generations. : A story of love over generations. It draws you in from the terror of the holucost to the new life after the war. The story of many loves and the true meaning of family. I throughly enjoyed this story.
