  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Maika -- Thoroughly haunting, disturbing, and alarmingly beautiful : As a fan of Dave McKean’s art since the early 90s, I first read this astonishing book way back then. At the time, even though the only Batman comic I’d read previously was The Dark Knight Returns, I found it thoroughly haunting, disturbing, and alarmingly beautiful. Grant Morrison is a brilliant writer and no one does what Dave McKean does, not back then and not now. But now, thanks to a steadily growing number of Batman comics fresh in my mind, I’ve re-read this book with new eyes and recognize that it’s even more extraordinary than I appreciated back then – as a glimpse into Batman’s mind and examination of some of his most enduring and twisted relationships, and as the tale of Arkham Asylum and its patients cleverly interwoven with the story of the asylum’s tortured origins. I recommend reading this 25th anniversary edition, which includes Morrison’s script, revealing the depths of symbolism woven into this already impressive tale. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- Wow! : At first when I started reading this book I was kind of appalled at how bizarre it seemed, and I didn't want to finish. Then, looking at the incomplete and never in focus, swirling artwork while reading the intertwining stories, I realized it perfectly illustrates a descent into madness. It is a nightmare unfolding. Well then I couldn't get enough, so I kept reading. But no matter how insane it was, it was a Batman story to the core. I loved it. Definitely won't be reading it every day though. ;) ( Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Joshua H -- Hell on earth. : This is a pretty good graphic novel and the artwork is very interesting however the font mixed into the artwork makes seeing the words a bit difficult at times especially on the jokers lines. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jason Harrington -- Visually mind melting, but a little vague. : It is not super easy to follow who is thinking in the narration, and the imagery is so literally dark that you will need to read this in bright light, and with good vision to be able to read the splatter paint font selected for The Joker's dialogue. This book reads like a riddle. However, I give it five stars for Dave McKean's underrated art alone, but the story was not bad. I think I just wanted a more final type ending, but I don't expect to get what I want, and I was enjoying how they wove the different narratives and timeframes together. This is more of an art book than a comic, except the pages very much read in the classic comic order. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 6, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- I think it holds uo : I am going to give thus five stars because of the sheer groundbreaking territory it goes for. Morrison and McKean took Bruce to places he rarely goes to anymore. The ultra crazy Batman of the 90s. The video game of the same name has the same crazy blood pumping through it. I dig the visuals of the characters. Is it endlessly rereadable? No. But maybe that's the point ( Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2021 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from lockback -- Barely legible. Barely readable. Not intelligible. : Much of this comic is barely legible. Extremely hard to follow. Odd and extremely twisted story. A very sick and twisted view of Batman. Not at all enjoyable. Waste of time and money. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dillon -- Morrison/McKean team-up is worth it! : Morrison is a juggernaut in the comic book world, and could be the reason many people are drawn to this graphic novel. And while the storyline is great, it is McKean’s signature artwork that makes this truly worth your hard-earned money. After reading (or perhaps experiencing) Gaiman and McKean’s poignantly beautiful Mr. Punch graphic novel, I knew that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see how McKean would approach something like the gallery of lunatics and hardened criminals of Arkham Asylum. The originality is, in my opinion, on par with Ross’s Kingdom Come. And while this doesn’t rank as my favorite Batman stand-alone story (The Killing Joke May always hold that title), this is still easily worth your time. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Andrew O. -- A unique and psychologically provoking story, if you have an open mind. : Batman Arkham Asylum was originally released in 1989 and written by Grant Morrison and illustrated by Dave McKean. The novel has 224 pages, but nearly half of it are extras to commemorate the 25th anniversary containing the final script, page layouts, 16 pages of artwork, and an afterword from Karen Berger. I'm no expert on Batman, the only comics I have under my belt (DC wise) are Year One, The Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Hush, The Dark Knight Returns, A Death In The Family, The Man Who Laughs, and now Arkham Asylum. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Mr Smith -- It's subjective ...... : It considered a classic - and this version has lots of 'extras' (scripts, storyboards, sketches etc) after the main story - so arguably its worth reading just for that. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 9, 2018 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Dean Thornton -- This graphic novel looks great!! : This Batman story looks great; and has some very good (if dark) artwork, throughout the book. Can't wait to get started on this one!!! Grant Morrison is ALWAYS a good read! (in my own, biased opinion anyway!) Great! Thank you. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 30, 2019 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Does Batman belong in Arkham? : Fantastic Batman story with a fascinatingly impressive approach to artwork. Love it! Grant Morrison always writes excellent characters and this big question about Batman comes to a head here! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2019 )
